Nur wenigen ist heute noch der karolingische Gelehrte bekannt, der aufgrund seiner umfassenden schriftstellerischen Tätigkeit und seiner herausragenden Rolle als Vermittler spätantiken und mittelalterlichen Wissens den Ehrennamen Praeceptor Germaniae Lehrer Deutschlands erhielt. Die in diesem Band versammelten Beiträge informieren in einer Mischung aus essayistischen und wissenschaftlichen Beiträgen über die Biographie Hrabans, über kulturgeschichtliche Zusammenhänge, in denen sein Leben, seine Tätigkeit als Lehrer und sein literarisches Schaffen zu sehen sind. Am Ende des Bandes steht ein Beitrag zur Geschichte des Missionsseminars von St. Ottilien, das den Grundstein für das spätere Rhabanus-Maurus-Gymnasium der oberbayerischen Erzabtei bildete.
